Dr. Abdul Alkalimat - saturday keynote
Dr. Abdul (as he is known) is bringing numerous experiences from the academia, community activism, community/social informatics and cross cultural perspectives (from his academic and community work around ICT in Ghana, England, South Africa, Germany, and the US). Moreover, he is an excellent public speaker (when you get to the link, scroll all the way down, next to his is an audio file of his presentation in Germany) very articulate and with a good sense of humor.
Dr. Abdul shows in compelling ways that there are ways to build bridges and connections between spaces of higher learning and the communities around them. Many speakers in your average tech conference bring to us the world of business and technology. Apart from his experience and knowledge from the world of academia and community building, he will also bring a unique experience: being one of few African Americans deeply involved with issues of new media, technology and community. Abdul is an example of how academics are able to break the walls of their privileged existence and work in the community.
